No one expected the home of America’s favorite chicken sandwich to turn into a political battleground. But it happened. "Chicken" is a fictional short story inspired by a fast food appreciation day that took place not so long ago. In Rob Stennett’s humorous, frightening, and surprisingly emotional short story we are introduced to the employees who are pulled like a wishbone by the right and the left. It’s a story about love and hate, heaven and hell, violence and pacifism, and most of all it’s a story about a chicken.

First story I read through of Mr. Stennett's, and I've found it was provocative, funny, engaging, even stunning. And the entirety of the story takes place in a few hours of one single day. But what a day the main character has!Following the heavy controversy of Chick-Fil-A's CEO's highly controversial remarks on his belief in marriage, one single employee doesn't really have much of a care about how people are reacting, all he cares about is that he's got a job and can't let his secret come out, lest the possibility of losing his job come through. And this day is setting records left and right, from record crowds to record time certain foods are gone, and things are okay with this guy until one customer makes a very hateful comment. Letting that slide, things get worse when his manager gets a verbal blindside. Then it gets really peculiar when a guy in a chicken outfit enters the scene. Oh yes, and a very awkward, almost heartbreaking scene dealing with the employee and his former love. Talk about a thunderstruck moment.
Unlike his previous novels, this short story doesn't come with footnotes to further expound anything. I guess all the necessary details are right there as needed to tell the story proper. OVerall, it is quite a story that, strangely, never feels like it's going overboard and never feels like it's trying to make you feel uncomfortable, just trying to help one understand another's point-of-view, even that one's hope about the afterlife. And it's stories like this I really love to read.

Chicken edition by Rob Stennett Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I was privileged to read a pre-release version of "Chicken." The story, while set in a fast food restaurant, steamrolls ahead at a juggernaut pace. While ostensibly it deals with the recent "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," that's not really its point people are. The fact of the matter is, no matter which side of this cultural divide you stand on, Jesus didn't die for ideals--he died for people. The genius of Rob's story is that it puts people, not agendas (neither right, nor left), front and center. Like Jesus, may we be not soft on sin, but soft on the hearts of the people he died for. This, as I see it, is the point of "Chicken" behind every agenda, behind every cause, are people--people with hearts. And those hearts matter to God. They should matter to all of us.
I believe the author of Chicken had a great idea for this short story. I just think he took it out of the oven and served it up to his readers too soon. The overabundance of editing errors, combined with a rather juvenile slant on an interesting subject, made for a disappointing read. It felt like this was published in haste, sacrificing a thorough edit that might have meant redemption and a stronger voice.
The light-hearted cover tricks hapless readers into thinking they will be enjoying an amusing short story. False advertising! What begins as an annoyingly preachy political rant masquerading as a short story suddenly morphs into a tragedy with an even more annoying theological rant.
Rob Stennett is a great author that pulls you into the story with great humor! I highly recommend this book.
A short story that will have you thinking, long after you put down the book. Mr. Stennett's characters are believable, getting the dialog started between gays & straights.
I bought Chicken last night because Rob Stennett is one of my favorite authors. I didn't know what to expect since the book came out so soon after the Chik-fil-a 'event' but boy, can Stennett crank out an engrossing story on short notice. I happen to be a big fan of short stories, perhaps because I have a touch of ADD, but even then, I don't usually read a short in just one sitting. I devoured Chicken like a man who hadn't eaten in days. The book is a page-turner, the point-of-view is captivating, the ending is unexpected, the writing is marvelous and the story is utterly thought-provoking. I've found myself pondering it most of the day today. Highly recommended.
Rob Stennett has a way with telling a story. His previous three books are all outstanding and well worth checking out, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little leery of picking this up. In the space of one day, what people thought about Chiken (misspelling intended) changed. It went from a fast food place with awesome food that was closed on Sundays to a political statement. Tackling this subject is something that can't help but be politicized, but Rob knocked it out of the park.
He did something that is sorely lacking especially in the church today. He took a powderkeg of a topic and humanized it in a wonderful way. He found a way to take on the entire topic that has become a spotlight on the perverbial culture war and moved the spotlight on to what actually should matter in the midst of all of this people. In the grand scheme of things, people are what matters and Rob found a frankly beautiful and tragic way to bring something to the surface that should be talked about more openly and honestly in the church. Well done, brother.
